The flight to New Zealand I cancelled at 23 — what if I'd gone?

This is the real example behind VV You's sample film “The Wind in the Orchard”. A decision was written down (here as “A road I didn't take”), and What If? wrote five possible paths — the first three free to read, the other two unlocked with VVCoin. We picked one of them, and it became the film. What If? doesn't predict the future, and it never decides for you.

The original example was written in Chinese; the English was prepared for this page.

The decision, as written

What decision did you face back then — and which road did you take?
At 23, I got a one-year working holiday visa for New Zealand and booked the flight. Two weeks before I was due to leave, a company back home offered me a job. My family told me to settle down first, so I cancelled the ticket. My best friend had given me a wide-brimmed straw hat for the trip. I still have it — I've never worn it once.
Looking back, what do you think about most?
If I'd got on that plane, would I have become braver — someone who knows what they want?
On the other road, what would you hope to see?
Me in that straw hat, tanned from picking apples in a New Zealand orchard with friends from all over the world; nights by a lake under a sky full of stars. Coming home a year later, knowing better what I want.
On the other road, what would you be afraid to see?
The money runs out fast, I'm lonely in a strange country, and when I come home I have to start all over again.

The five possible paths What If? wrote

  1. The Wind in the Orchard

Maybe the plane really took off — and the straw hat caught the wind for the first time.

In this possibility, you never cancelled the ticket. The night the plane took off, you stuffed the straw hat into your backpack, and after landing you found your way to an apple orchard on the North Island. Maybe you spent your days picking apples between the rows, your skin slowly turning golden, and your nights around the camp with travellers from all over the world, laughing in a dozen accents. Maybe one evening you drove out to a lake, switched off the headlights, and the stars looked as if they had been poured into the water. Maybe, as the year drew to a close, you could handle the unfamiliar on your own — and knew more clearly the life you wanted. The day you came home, the brim of the hat had frayed a little: the mark of something well used.

  2. Ups and Downs

Maybe that road wasn't all smooth sailing — there were joys, and some messy moments too.

In this possibility, you left as planned. The first few months were maybe thrilling and chaotic — work was harder to find than you'd imagined, and you might have lost your first orchard job for not being quick enough. Maybe you met a few friends at a youth hostel and shared a car down to the South Island, and life slowly found its rhythm. There were probably homesick nights and a tight budget, but you learned to make every dollar count, and to ask for help. When the year ended, maybe you hadn't saved much — but your English was fluent, and you had made a few friends you still keep in touch with. Back home, it might have taken a few months to find your direction again, but what you brought back was a calm that doesn't shake easily.

  3. On Your Own

Maybe the money ran out fast, and nights far from home were quieter than you'd imagined.

In this possibility, maybe you underestimated what a working holiday costs. Within two months your savings were nearly gone, and you had to string together odd jobs to get by. Language and culture may have made friends hard to find; some nights you stayed in your room, missing home. The straw hat may have hung on your suitcase, unworn. But in this story, perhaps the turn came the day you found the courage to pin a note on a community board, or walked into a Chinese supermarket to ask about part-time work — and someone offered a hand and introduced you to a local support group. Slowly the days grew easier, you could breathe again, and you began to see what the journey meant in a new light.

  4. A Letter Halfway

Maybe, six months in, unexpected news turned the road in a new direction.

  5. Apples, Years Later

Maybe ten years on, on an ordinary afternoon, you'll think of that unworn straw hat again.
