What If? examples · A decision I'm facing
A new job in Singapore — or Mum, alone in the old house by the sea?
This is the real example behind VV You's sample film “The Missed Birthday”. A decision was written down (here as “A decision I'm facing”), and What If? wrote five possible paths — the first three free to read, the other two unlocked with VVCoin. We picked one of them, and it became the film. What If? doesn't predict the future, and it never decides for you.
The original example was written in Chinese; the English was prepared for this page.
The decision, as written
- What decision or situation are you facing?
- I grew up in a small seaside town in England, and I'm an only child. I've been a designer at an ad agency in London for five years. Last week a big company in Singapore offered me the job of design lead for Asia-Pacific — double my pay, and the chance I've always wanted. I have to answer by the end of the month. But Mum lives alone in the old stone house by the sea. Once a month I take the train home, and she's always waiting by the roses at the door. Every time I leave, she says nothing — she just slips a jar of her homemade strawberry jam into my backpack.
- What's your biggest concern right now?
- That once I'm in Singapore, I'll get home only once or twice a year. Mum is 63; if anything happens, it's more than ten hours' flying to get back. And I'm afraid she's lonely and just doesn't say so.
- If things go well, what's the outcome you're hoping for?
- I do well in Singapore and still come home often — really home, for afternoon tea by the sea and trimming the roses at the door with her, not just video calls — and she's happy to fly out to see me in Singapore. Mum is happy, and proud of me.
- Is there a specific bad outcome you're worried about?
- I get so busy I forget even her birthday — and when I finally look up, she has grown much older, and I've missed it all.

Roses and a New Route
What if you carried the taste of that jam with you, and made your new life in Singapore its own kind of reunion?
In this possibility, you took the job in Singapore. The first months went into getting to know the team and your new role, but you made coming home once a season a habit nothing could break. Video calls turned out to be useful after all — you showed Mum the view from your office window on her phone, and she laughed that it was better than television. One long holiday, you simply brought her to Singapore for two weeks and took her for afternoon tea at your favourite café. Back home, she told you on the phone that the neighbours all envied her for having a child doing so well. You began to feel that distance might not be as frightening as you'd thought — it just takes more care to plan.

Between Two Places
What if the rush of Singapore and the pull of home by the sea took turns tugging you in different directions?
In this possibility, you went to Singapore. The first six months were intense — one project after another — and you went home less often than you'd planned, roughly every two or three months. On the phone Mum always said she was fine, but you could hear the occasional silence. Once, a report deadline made you miss the video call on her birthday, and it stayed with you. So you changed your approach: you put a fixed monthly call in your calendar and treated it like a meeting, and you started booking cheap flights early for the holidays. Mum began learning to film the new roses she'd planted and send them to you. The way you kept in touch changed — but it never broke.

The Missed Birthday
What if being busy quietly swallowed the visits you'd promised yourself?
In this possibility, the work in Singapore turned out heavier than you expected. Business trips and late nights filled your schedule, and the visits home you'd planned each season kept slipping. You realised you hadn't video-called Mum in three months — until your cousin messaged to tell you that on her birthday, Mum had been home alone and hadn't even bought a cake. Your heart sank, and you saw that if things went on like this, it wouldn't only be a birthday you missed. You booked a flight home that same weekend, even if only for two days, to sit with her by the roses over a cup of tea — and you put the monthly calls and seasonal visits back in your diary, no longer letting work decide.
